SEO audit for non-tech entrepreneurs — 20 minutes, 7 checks, no jargon
How to know if your website brings you clients, or if it's sleeping in a drawer of Google
The reality: most entrepreneurs' websites are invisible
« By the end of these 20 minutes, you'll have a printable checklist of the 7 critical points to check on your site this week. No jargon, no subscription, no tracking cookies. »

Check 1 — Does Google know your site exists?
Without indexing, your site is invisible. A free 30-second check.
- Type this into Google: "site:yourdomain.com"
- Google lists the pages it has indexed — if the list is empty or very short, that's a red flag
- Go to Google Search Console (free) to request manual indexing
- Verified case: 1 client in 4 discovers here that they are accidentally blocking Google through a misconfigured robots.txt file
Check 2 — Do your titles say 'what I sell, to whom'?
Your SEO title is the shop window of your online store. Get it wrong and you lose clicks even when you rank well.
- Open every important page of your site and look at the browser tab
- A good title: "Wedding Photographer Lyon — Asilidesign" (trade + city + brand)
- A bad title: "Home" or "Welcome to our website"
- Free tool: the SEO Meta in 1 Click extension for Chrome shows every page's title in one click

Check 3 — Is your site fast on mobile?
On mobile, one extra second = 7% of customers gone. A free check in 2 clicks.
- Go to pagespeed.web.dev (free Google tool)
- Paste your home page URL — the test takes 30 seconds
- Check: mobile score >= 70 (good), 50-70 (room for improvement), < 50 (urgent)
- The 3 common causes: oversized images, too many WordPress plugins, no caching
Check 4 — Is your site usable on a smartphone?
60% of local searches happen on mobile. A site that isn't mobile-ready = 60% of customers lost before they even see your offer.
- Open your site on your own smartphone
- Simple test: can a visitor order, book or contact you without zooming or scrolling sideways?
- Buttons too small, text overflowing, a form you can't use with your thumb = red flag
- Free tool: search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly — Google's verdict in 20 seconds

Check 5 — Is your content rich enough?
AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview) cite the sites that answer clearly. Not brochure sites.
- List the 10 questions your customers ask you before buying
- Check: does each of those questions have a clear answer (50-100 words) on your site?
- If not, create an FAQ page or a blog with 1 question = 1 dedicated page
- AI-friendly bonus: use H2 headings phrased as questions ("How much does an SEO audit cost?")
How to apply the method
Minutes 1-5 — Indexing
The "site:" command + a Google Search Console check. Zero indexing = absolute priority.
Minutes 6-10 — Titles + meta descriptions
SEO Meta in 1 Click extension on your 5 main pages. Write down the terrible titles.
Minutes 11-15 — Speed + mobile
PageSpeed Insights + Google's mobile test. Screenshot the scores.
Minutes 16-20 — Content + FAQ
List 3 customer questions your site leaves unanswered. Those are your next 3 articles.
The 5 free tools you need
Google Search Console
Free, official Google tool. See whether your pages are indexed, which keywords bring you clicks, and the technical errors.
PageSpeed Insights
Free, Google again. Mobile + desktop speed scores plus concrete recommendations in order of importance.
SEO Meta in 1 Click
Free Chrome extension. Right-click on a page and you see the title, meta description, H1, H2 and images with no alt text.
Bing Webmaster Tools

What you'll walk away with
A good DIY audit fits on a single A4 page: 7 rows, 3 columns (check, verdict, action). Copy this table into a document or a spreadsheet, then fill in one row per check.
Ask a question about my auditWhen DIY isn't enough anymore
This course covers 80% of cases. The remaining 20% call for an in-depth analysis by a professional.
- A sharp drop in traffic (> 30% in a month) — there is a technical cause or a penalty to identify
- A site migration ahead — an audit beforehand keeps you from losing 100% of your traffic
- An e-commerce site with > 500 pages — scale changes the audit priorities
- Aggressive competition on high-revenue keywords — an in-depth competitive analysis is needed

Questions I get asked the most
How long before I see results?
3 to 6 months for visible effects on traffic. Technical fixes (indexing, speed) can pay off within 2 weeks.
Should I redo an audit every month?
No. A full audit every 6 months is enough. In between, a quick monthly check in Google Search Console (20 min) catches problems as they emerge.
Does SEO still work in 2026 now that AI is here?
Yes, more than ever. AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity) cite well-optimized sites. SEO in 2026 = classic SEO + AEO (answer engine optimization).
Do I need to pay for a tool like Semrush?
For a small business, no. The 5 free tools covered here are enough. Semrush/Ahrefs become useful beyond 10 k visits/month.
Take action on your site
Run the 7 checks, record each verdict in your one-page report, then fix issues in order of urgency. For an in-depth analysis, Growth Audit (AI + human) takes over.
